Colorado Shih Tzu and Maltese Rescue

All About Us

The Colorado Shih Tzu and Maltese Rescue (hereinafter "CSTMR") is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt orgnization,a member of All Breed Rescue Network ("ABRN"), and is a Denver, Colorado based rescue that was formed in mid 1999 to aid in the overwhelming amount of abandonded and stray dogs in need of assistance.  We provide love, care, food, and a warm and safe environment until an appropriate permanent home may be found for the Shih Tzu, Maltese, and occassionally other small mixed breed dogs. We accept relinquished Shih Tzu, Maltese, and mixes of either of the two breeds from owners who,for a myriad of reasons, can no longer keep or care for their dogs.  We also receive dogs from numerous shelters throughout the Denver Metro area, and from individuals who have found a stray dog that have been unsuccessful in finding its owner.

CSTMR brings these little dogs into our own homes and gets to know each dog's individual personality, temperment, and habits in order
to match them with the most suitable home possible. Our goal is to place each
dog in a permanent and loving home, so he/she will never have to endure
the stress and uncertainty of losing their human companion(s) that he/she loved unconditionally and all that is familiar to them.

Anyone interested in adopting a dog through CSTMR must complete an
adoption application. The adoption application helps us to determine the best "fit" for the dog and the potential new owners. Potential permanent homes must also agree to a home check before an adoption can take place.

Each dog receives a veterinary check-up after they are received by CSTMR. It is our policy to make sure that each dog is spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, tested for heartworm, and groomed. The potential owner agrees to pay the adoption fee and understands that this is to help defer rescue costs for veterinary care, transportation, and general supply costs incurred daily by the dog in order for their care. This "adoption fee" ranges between $300.00 - $350.00 per dog. Puppies are on the higher end and older dogs or those with special needs may be on the lower end.  The dog's medical records and history will be provided to the adoptive family, whenever possible.

Donations are also used in the maintenance of our group. We are a 501(3)(c), tax exempt, non-profit organization and all the time and effort of our volunteers are donated through the goodness of their hearts and their concern for these special little dogs.  Adoption fees and donations all go toward things such as veterinary care, medication (prescription and non), medical supplies, premium food and supplements,  grooming services, and transportation costs.

Dogs that are relinquished to CSTMR become the property of CSTMR and the relinquisher forfeits all owner rights with regard to that dog.

CSTMR does their best to obtain as much information as they can about each dog, however, they cannot guarantee the health or behavior of any dog adopted through our group. Each dog placed by CSTMR requires a signed adoption contract between CSTMR and the adoptive owner.

There is often a waiting period for the Maltese breed because they come in less frequently.  The Shih Tzu is a more popular breed and, therefore, more end up in the rescue and there normally isn't a waiting period for a Shih Tzu.

Because we are a non-profit organization and the medical and housing needs of the rescue dogs are great, we rely on the generosity of kind and concerned individuals to help cover the costs of caring for these wonderful little dogs. To help us realize our purpose of saving as many lives as we can of these precious animals, please send your donation to the following address:

the mommy of Amos and Andy (below).

his owner worked a lot of hours and she lived in an apartment and didn't have enough time for him.

She came to me a horrible mess.... Mindy is proof that beauty can come from the streets. Overcoming kennel cough, a 2" scar on the side of her body, starving and very thin, matts to the skin, overbreeding, crooked mouth and shyness, she is now my Princess.....Debbie

Mercedes.jpg (786389 bytes)

Mercedes was given to a groomer because the previous owner could not keep her and her brother.   The groomer kept the pair for a couple of years when she was reported to the county for having too many animals, so she had to relinquish Mercedes and her brother to the rescue.  They both now have wonderful homes who have very loving owners.
Chewey was found by a person as a stray and could not find the owner, so turned him over to the rescue.  He now has a wonderful home with one of our foster mommies.
